That sounds confusing. Let me explain. “If this (meaning an event, a situation, a result, or whatever) is the way it is (meaning that there is no way to change it); then it must be okay.”. This last part is tricky because it requires a shift in thought. It means that if there is no way to control a result or event or situation, and a person continues to be upset by it (becomes anxious or unhappy or depressed or angry), they make their lives miserable. The shift in thought is to not fret about what you can’t control. And people can learn to do this.
AA uses the Serenity Prayer which is very similar to the above: “God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.
